King Canary's new brewery is at 562 Williamson Road in Mooresville

King Canary Brewing Company, the Charlotte-area's newest brewery, opens May 19 in Mooresville on Lake Norman.

The brewery is in a 4,500 square-foot, two-story, renovated building at 562 Williamson Road. The brewery will include an outdoor seating area facing the lake, according to a statement from founders Matt and Andrea Gravina. King Canary's decor will play homage to the brewery's name, with bird cage light fixtures, wallpaper and custom-made bird tap handles.

The Gravinas left their corporate jobs (Matt was a CPA, Andrea worked for Ralph Lauren's corporate office) two years ago to work on opening a brewery. At King Canary, Matt will head brewing operations, while Andrea will handle the brewery's design, marketing strategy and community outreach.

From noon until 10 p.m. on opening day, King Canary will host a grand opening celebration that includes live music, food trucks and outdoor activities for for adults and kids. The opening tap list will include a handful of different craft brews, including Poppycock (IPA), Lost Loon (farmhouse IPA), Squawky Talky (pale ale) and Tweet Tooth (milk stout with coffee and vanilla.)

“This community has been so supportive of us since we moved here almost two years ago and shared our goal of creating a brewery with great beer, brewed from the highest quality malt and hops, served in a cozy farmhouse atmosphere,” the Gravinas said in a statement.

Charlotte has experienced a rapid growth of breweries in recent years, but a comparison with a nearby city shows there's still room for more craft beer here.

Asheville, with a population about one-tenth that of Charlotte, has 26 breweries, according to an analysis from Forbes. If Charlotte had that same saturation, there could be around 260 breweries in the city. A highly anticipated brewery opening soon in Charlotte is the joint brewing facility by Victory Brewing and Southern Tier Brewing Co. in at Yancey and Pineville roads.
