On color: “Using a black and white palette, I want to seek protection against external stress,” she writes. “The newspaper has been rolled up, layered and cut to express how this media provides that sense of external stress; hopefully each piece becomes a shield that will help the wearer find a sense of place.”

Together, bracelet; $105.

Choosing materials: Arenas’ choice of materials varies depending on the concept that she is developing. She applies clean lines, a neutral palette and nontraditional materials in her designs. When Arenas uses metal and paper, her designs are “strong and fragile at the same time.” In her Absence collection, she used clear plastic spoons. In another piece, newspaper and silver served as the main materials because “they speak directly to me of home.”

Colorful Headline, brooch; $250.
