What: Skinny ties, bow ties, pocket squares, kimono coverups and screen-printed zip pouches, handmade from vintage and upcycled fabrics and classic cloths.
Never miss a local story.
Who: Hollie Burgess is from a small town close to Manchester, England. She’s lived in Portugal and New York, but moved to Charlotte in 2011 to study new media design at Queens University. She learned to sew from her grandmothers. “Both of my Nanas were seamstresses – one made circus tents,” said Burgess. “One taught me how to hand stitch and the other bought me my first sewing machine at 15.”
Inspiration: Burgess finds interesting patterned and colorful fabrics at thrift store shops. Even if she doesn’t have an immediate plan, she keeps them nearby, knowing that they will make it to her cutting table eventually.
On the name: Burgess, introduced to the TV series “Dr. Who” by her husband, got hooked. The character Idris made this remark in one episode: “Oh, my beautiful idiot. You have what you've always had. You've got me.”
How it launched: “I originally started out with baby clothes, but after my husband complained that I never made anything cool for him, I gave ties a go. In turn, he became my guinea pig!”
