Steele Creek is one of the fastest-growing parts of Charlotte, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is set to buy a site for a new elementary school to help relieve some of the pressure.
The school board is set to vote Tuesday night on the purchase of nearly 20 acres off Sandy Porter Road, west of South Tryon Street. The school system would pay $1.6 million for the land, which is owned by several individuals.
“The property will be used to develop an elementary school to relieve Nations Ford, Steele Creek and Sterling Elementary Schools, which was approved as part of the 2017 Capital Improvement Plan by the Board of Education,” the CMS agenda for Tuesday’s meeting reads.

The site is currently vacant and mostly wooded. And between booming developments such as Berewick and planned new developments, the Steele Creek area’s growth spurt doesn’t look likely to end anytime soon.
