Construction on Dowd YMCA parking lot starts Wednesday

June 21, 2016 3:11 PM

The Dowd YMCA is getting started on construction this week for a new parking deck adjacent to its East Morehead Street facilities that’s meant to relieve overcrowding, the first in a series of major renovations at the flagship gym.

The four-story parking deck is on Caldwell Street, at a 1-acre site between Lexington and Templeton avenues. Charlotte City Council approved a rezoning request to allow the parking deck Monday.

The parking deck will include up to 17,000 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor and a walking trail along the site’s southern edge, and it will be shared with land owner Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church. The site is currently used as a surface parking lot.

In a message sent to members Tuesday, Dowd YMCA officials said they will put up an 8-foot tall construction fence around the site Wednesday. Construction is expected to begin July 5, after which people won’t be able to park in the lot until the deck is finished. Completion is targeted for December 2016.

After that, the Dowd YMCA plans to start work on a previously announced but delayed 30,000 square-foot addition and major renovation to its gym facilities in 2017.

The construction will reduce the amount of parking available to Dowd YMCA members until the new deck opens. In addition to the parking lots immediately around the Dowd YMCA, members can also park at a lot adjacent to Pritchard Memorial when not in use by the church. The Dowd YMCA suggested members visit at non-peak times or check out other, nearby YMCAs to avoid congestion.
