Lidl, the German chain that has already been hosting hiring events in Charlotte, is opening its first U.S. stores on June 15. The grocer on Wednesday put out a list of its first 20 stores, including some in the Carolinas and Virginia, that will open at various points throughout the summer.

But it looks like Charlotte shoppers will have to wait a bit longer for nearby Lidl stores to open.

The low-cost grocer said it will first open North Carolina stores in Kinston, Greenville, Wilson, Sanford, Rocky Mount, Winston-Salem, Havelock, Rockingham and Wake Forest. In South Carolina, Lidl will open stores next month in Spartanburg and Greenville.

Throughout the Charlotte area, Lidl has several stores under construction, including in Mooresville and Rock Hill, though it’s still unclear when those will open.

The supermarket chain said that it plans to open up to 100 stores across the East Coast by next summer, resulting in the creation of 5,000 jobs. Lidl said customers can expect to save up to 50 percent on their groceries compares with other supermarkets.

“Lidl is grocery shopping refreshed, retooled and rethought to make life better for all our customers,” said Brendan Proctor, president and CEO of Lidl US.

In anticipation of its expansion into the Carolinas, Lidl earlier this spring started hiring at its regional headquarters and distribution center in Mebane, which is about 120 miles northeast of Charlotte.

Lidl is breaking into the U.S. market a bit sooner than expected, as the Washington Post reported earlier this year. The company had originally said it planned to enter the U.S. by 2018.
