What’s going on with the new Common Market in South End?

If you’ve driven through South End on Tremont Avenue recently, you may have noticed that the new Common Market doesn’t look like it’s anywhere close to opening. In fact, renovation of the building hasn’t even started.

But the market has received the green light to move forward with construction, and work should begin in the next few weeks, said Graham Worth, one of the market’s new partners.

The market is in the old Carolina Prepress building on Tremont Avenue, next to the new restaurant/cocktail lounge, Zeppelin.

Graham said the market is tentatively scheduled to open in early May. He did not provide a reason for the construction holdup.

“While we certainly have no expectations to replace the old Common Market, we do feel like we will again create a neighborhood living room for our old and new friends in South End to interact as a community,” Graham said in an email.

The final design includes 5,000 square feet of interior space, including an indoor/outdoor mezzanine, and a 2,000 square-foot shaded patio, Graham said. Owners have said the new market will have the same look and feel as the old one, including its old furniture and decor.

The beloved original Common Market closed in July 2016 after the site of the store, other businesses and the weekly Food Truck Friday gathering was sold for $12.2 million to make way for a new office building that will be the new regional headquarters for an Austin-based investment firm called Dimensional Fund Advisors.

Common Market has other locations in Plaza Midwood and Oakwold.
