Growing number of events canceled due to uptown unrest

It’s still business as usual for the Charlotte Convention Center and NASCAR Hall of Fame on Thursday, but many events scheduled for uptown are being postponed today due to the violence that happened overnight in uptown Charlotte.

Among those canceled or postponed:

The Democratic Women of North Carolina is postponing its 56th Annual State Convention, to be held in Charlotte this weekend. “The decision was made in consideration of those members who may be traveling to Charlotte from across the State,” said Concetta Caliendo, DWNC President. The future dates of the convention will be released as soon as determined.

The Jeanne Robertson performance scheduled for Friday, Sept. 23 at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts has been rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 18. Current ticket holders will receive tickets for the new date automatically. Patrons can call 704-372-1000 with questions.

The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art on South Tryon is closed due to the State of Emergency and is canceling Modernism + Film series screening of “Journeyman Architect: The Life and Work of Donald Wexler” Thursday which was scheduled at 6 p.m.

The Mint Museum in uptown is closed Thursday and announced that the Uptown Crawl scheduled for Thursday night has been postponed until Oct. 27.

The Charlotte Knights are canceling the Berkshire Hathaway Family Movie Night Friday, Sept. 23 at BB&T Ballpark “due to the rise in tensions in Charlotte over the last 48 hours.” The event, which was set to start at 7:30 p.m., will be rescheduled.

The Harvey B. Gantt Center Symposium 2016 featuring Anna Deavere Smith has been canceled Thursday night at the Knight Theater, 430 South Tryon Street. Refunds being offered.

New Acropolis Charlotte, an educational nonprofit, is canceling all activities and classes scheduled for Thursday.

Construction firm Balfour Beatty said it has canceled out a “topping out” ceremony for the 300. South Tryon office tower it’s building in uptown. But it will still hold an appreciation lunch for on site workers.

The North and South Carolina chapter of Certified Commercial Investment Member association (CCIM) is canceling its Joint State Conference Thursday and Friday at the Omni in uptown. The event will be rescheduled. Refunds are being offered on registration fees.

The Charlotte Chamber’s University City Taste event set for Thursday night at the Shoppes at University Place has been rescheduled for Sept. 29.

Chef Alyssa's Kitchen in South End is rescheduling tonight’s Spanish Tapas Cooking Class. It will be rescheduled. All guests will receive full credit to a future cooking class, organizers said.

The Trade and Tryon streets location of the Charlotte Athletic Club will remain closed Thursday and all classes are canceled.

The Thursday night Crew Network Foundation Casino Night fundraiser to benefit students at Queens University, UNC Charlotte and the CREW Network Foundation is being canceled and will not be rescheduled. All food prepared for the event is being donated to the Urban Ministries and local police stations. The online auction continues will close as planned at 8:30 p.m. this evening.

Parker Poe is postponing a CLE/Social in its uptown office for ACC members entitled “International Business: Top 10 Things for In-House Counsel to Consider.” The event was scheduled to take place 3:30-6:30 p.m. on South Tryon Street.

CDI Southeast has postponed a grand opening today at 1616 Camden Road, where Carolina Panther Greg Olsen was to be a guest speaker. It will be rescheduled, said Dan Ryan, Vice President of CDI. Care Ring has canceled its Care Ring Hope for Community Health Luncheon, scheduled Thursday Sept. 22. Care Ring says it will reschedule the event at a later date. “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, but we are sure that you understand that your safety is of utmost importance and concern for us,” said the agency in a statement.

Sharon Elementary School on Foxcroft Road has postponed a field trip to Bank of America Stadium Thursday. The school will work to reschedule the trip, officials said.

Cookies for Kids' Cancer (a national non profit) is postponing its annual Chefs for Kids' Cancer - The Carolinas at The Fillmore Underground in NC Music Factory. The Thursday night event was to host 400 Charlotteans gathering support children battling cancer.

Senator Jeff Tarte has postponed a fund raising event to be held tonight in Matthews.
