A Hickory man died from injuries he sustained after jumping out of a cab on Tuesday in order to avoid paying his fare, according to multiple media reports.
Police initially thought Michael Jason Curl was killed in a hit-and-run crash when they found him dead on a road in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, WFMY-News reported.
But by Wednesday, officials had determined that Curl jumped out of a cab after refusing to pay for his ride when he arrived to his destination, multiple news outlets reported.
Badara Gaye, the cab driver, reported the incident to the cab company, but didn’t realize the extent of Curl’s injuries, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. Gaye is not facing charges.
Curl’s was taken to a local medical center for an autopsy.
Police believe the impact with the road killed Curl, Fox 8 reported.
