As Charlotte-Mecklenburg police continued to investigate Wednesday’s fatal shooting of 23-year-old Jamarcus Walker, his family said Thursday they will always remember him as a community volunteer with a giving disposition.
Walker was shot early Wednesday in the 2700 block of Botany Street, near LaSalle Street in west Charlotte, police said.
Police said they believe Walker was in a vehicle traveling on Botany Street when a person in a second vehicle pulled alongside and began shooting. Walker left his vehicle, ran behind a home and collapsed, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not said whether they have a suspect but asked anyone with information about the shooting to call 704-432-TIPS (8477) and speak with a homicide detective or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
Walker was released from prison in March 2012 after serving seven months for felony breaking and entering and had trials pending on several other charges.
His family said Thursday they will remember him for the many ways he made a positive difference in the community and their lives.
Walker was family-oriented and friendly and had a “great heart” and a “loving, silly personality,” his sister, Jalisa Walker, 24, said.
Her brother took time to volunteer at the Boys & Girls Clubs in Dillehay Courts, the neighborhood in which he lived.
He volunteered at his younger siblings’ school, Druid Hills Academy, and in the athletic department of West Charlotte High, his former school, Jalisa Walker said.
He also gave back to Crisis Assistance Ministry and Goodwill, she said.
“Jamarcus was overall a well-rounded individual,” Jalisa Walker said. “He loved his family and friends dearly.”
