NFL QB Michael Vick looking for a job – with a contender

July 21, 2016 1:12 PM

In Charlotte for the annual HoopTee Celebrity Golf Classic, quarterback Michael Vick was up at 6 a.m. Thursday getting his daily workout in.

He’s out of a job, and it’s unclear whether any of the 32 NFL teams will ask the 36-year-old to join their team. But Vick is still committed to football for at least this year.

“I’m going to continue to stay optimistic about my 2016 season and try to enjoy it,” Vick said. “I wouldn’t say that I would go to any of the 32 teams. At this point in my career I would love to play for a contender. If anything, you’ve just got to be willing to make a contribution. In the NFL, that’s what it’s all about.”

Considered roundly as the fastest quarterback to ever play the game, Vick believes he’d still be in the top-three in the league. He began naming off Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin III and Cam Newton as guys who would compete in the top three before a reporter cut him off.

“Cam couldn’t beat you in the 40?” a reporter asked. Vick ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at his pro day while Newton was clocked at 4.59 seconds.

“No, Cam can’t beat me in the 40,” Vick smiled. “But his speed is decent. Decent speed. Good enough. Fast enough, I will say that.”

Vick marveled at Carolina’s 2015 season and said he wished the Panthers could have finished it off in Super Bowl 50. Newton grew up a big fan of Vick in Atlanta, and now Vick is the fan of Newton.

“I like Cam’s style. I think you’ll have more kids that will want to play with this kind of style,” Vick said. “But everybody’s not going to be blessed to grow to 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds. And it’s all muscle. He’s special.”
