Assailant arrested after 1 shot on campus of Johnson C. Smith University

One person was shot and injured on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University and another person was taken into custody following the shooting, authorities said.

Police haven’t identified the person who was shot about 6:30 p.m. at a university residence hall on Beatties Ford Road. Footage from WBTV's helicopter showed several police cars and an ambulance in a parking lot. Officers had taped off two areas nearby.

In a news release, a Johnson C. Smith University spokeswoman said no students were harmed in the shooting, but didn’t give details about who was hurt.

The statement said the assailant, who wasn’t a student, was apprehended and the gun used in the shooting was confiscated. Police haven’t released the identity of the alleged assailant, or said what charges the person will face.

The shooting occurred during spring break for the university. The university said it appears two students violated the university’s policies regarding visitation and weapons. The students, who have not been identified, have been suspended while the university investigates.
